5 collagens I wasted my money on …and the 1 that finally did something for my knees

Six collagen bags lined up for a taste test

My knees grind on the stairs. My hands are stiff every morning. And everyone kept telling me collagen was the answer.

So I bought one. Then another. Skin collagen, beauty collagen, "menopause" collagen. Weeks on each one. My knees never changed.

$300 later, I figured out what nobody told me: most collagen was never built for your joints in the first place.

Here's the short version, so you don't have to learn it the slow way like I did.

collagen #1

Vital Proteins

❌ wrong type for joints Vital Proteins bag

My first one, like everybody's. Took it two months waiting for my knees to ease. They didn't. It's Type 1 & 3, the skin type. It was never going to reach a joint.

Type 1 & 3lead warning on their own site

Bottom line: lovely for skin. Wrong type for knees, and the safety warnings sealed it for me. (their disclosure)

collagen #2

Garden of Life

❌ wrong type for joints Garden of Life bag

I wanted this one to work, clean, mixes nicely, no fake taste. But it's another Type 1 & 3. Same story as the first, minus the safety cloud. Two months, no change in my knees.

Type 1 & 3clean & tastes fine

Bottom line: a genuinely nice skin collagen. Just not a joint one.

collagen #3

Obvi

⚠️ Type 2, but barely Obvi jar

Sounded smart, five types of collagen, Type 2 "in there somewhere." That's the catch. Split across five, the Type 2 my joints needed is a sprinkle. And not the form that survives your stomach.

too little Type 2wrong form

Bottom line: Type 2 is technically in there, underpowered and the wrong form.

collagen #4

Elavate

❌ menopause label, skin formula Elavate pouch

Real hope for this one, they talk about the "collagen collapse" in menopause, and it feels thoughtful. But the collagen they lead on is still mostly the skin types. Type 2 isn't the star. My knees felt the same.

skin types up frontnice menopause story

Bottom line: a menopause angle on the label is marketing, not a formula.

collagen #5

The Collagen Co.

❌ wrong type for joints The Collagen Co. bag

You've seen the ads. Flavored shakes, big glow story, pretty branding. As a daily drink it's good. But it's built on skin-type collagen at a big dose, joints are a side note.

skin typetastes great

Bottom line: a lovely beauty shake. Not a joint formula.

the one that actually worked

BalmBare Revive Mix

✅ the one I use now BalmBare Revive Mix scoop pouring into coffee

I almost didn't try it, after five rounds of "nice for skin, nothing for knees," I was done. But this was the first one built around the joint instead of the face. So I gave it a shot.

  • UC-II Type 2 collagen. The joint type, in the form that survives your stomach and actually gets there.
  • Hyaluronic acid. Basically the water your cartilage holds. It's what keeps the joint cushioned instead of grinding.
  • Vitamin C. Your body can't build collagen without it. It makes the rest actually work.

Two honest things: it's not overnight, I felt the first real difference around two weeks, and it built from there. And it tastes like a light creamer, which after the bags I could barely swallow made me laugh.

Bottom line: the only one on my whole list built for joints, not skin. It's the one I reorder.

it sold out on Amazon, their own site is the only place it's in stock now

The honest verdict

The other five aren't bad. They're fine at what they're built for, skin. That's just not what I was buying them for. I wanted my knees back.

I didn't spend a year and $300 for nicer nails. I did it to get down the stairs in the morning without holding the rail. Only one was actually built to do that.

If your knees are why you're here

The whole thing, in 5 ticks:

  1. Check the type first. Type 1 & 3 is skin. Your joints need Type 2. That one line decides everything.
  2. Check the form. Regular Type 2 breaks down in your stomach. UC-II (undenatured) survives the trip.
  3. Don't chase the biggest scoop. The joint form works at a tiny dose. More powder is usually just more of the wrong type.
  4. Look for what's missing. A real joint formula also has hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. Most only have the collagen.
  5. Be patient. Nothing real works overnight. Give it two weeks, judge it on the stairs.

If your bag says Type 1 & 3, it's a skin product, and your knees never got the memo. That's the one word I wish someone told me to check $300 ago.

This is exactly what happened to me. Two years on the pink one for my nails and my knees just got worse. Read my label after this, Type 1 and 3. I had no idea there was more than one kind. Wish I'd seen this sooner.

That was me too Sandra. Flip it over is the one thing nobody tells you. Glad it helped x

Ordered the Revive Mix after reading this a few weeks back. Not a miracle, but I got out of the car this morning without that little groan I always do. Small thing. Made me smile though.

My physiotherapist actually mentioned Type 2 to me last year and I completely forgot until I read this. She said the same thing, most collagen is for skin. Wish I'd listened to her then.

Bought this for my wife, she does the stairs in our place about 20 times a day. Three weeks in and she's stopped complaining about her knees at night. Happy wife etc etc 😅

Honestly was so skeptical, I've wasted money on so many of these. The 60 day guarantee is the only reason I tried it. Kept it. That tells you everything.

Same, the guarantee is what made me risk it too. Coming up on week 6 now and I'm gardening again.

The part about it tasting like creamer is true 😂 I was dreading another chalky one. Goes in my morning coffee and I don't even notice it.

I take a different Type 2 one from the health shop and it does help, so I can vouch that the type really is the thing that matters. Might switch to this one though, mine doesn't have the hyaluronic acid in it.

That's the bit most are missing Linda, the HA is what keeps it cushioned. That's why I stuck with this one.

Had a knee replacement booked for spring. My daughter made me read this first. I'm not saying I've cancelled anything but for the first time in two years I'm not counting down the days to surgery either.

Just a heads up for anyone ordering, it was out of stock when I first looked and took me a second try to get it. Worth checking back if it says sold out.

55 and I felt like the only one whose collagen "wasn't working." Turns out I was just taking the wrong one this whole time. Thank you for writing this out so plainly Karen.
